China's robotics market volume in the first half of 2018 surpassed the full-year figure of 2017.

Rapid Growth of Industrial Robotics, Handling Robots Take the Largest Share

China’s industrial robotics market has enjoyed rapid expansion, accounting for roughly one-third of the global market and ranking first worldwide in industrial robot deployment. In 2017, the domestic industrial robotics sector maintained robust growth with a market size of approximately USD 4.22 billion, a year-on-year increase of 24%. The figure climbed to USD 5.22 billion in the first half of 2018. Handling robots claimed the largest proportion at 65%, followed by assembly robots at 15%, six percentage points higher than welding robots. Driven by surging demand for intelligent transformation of manufacturing facilities, market appetite for industrial robots remains strong.

Huge Potential for Service Robots, Household Segment Leads Industrial Growth

China’s service robotics market has expanded rapidly and become a highlight across the robotics industry. By the end of 2016, the population aged 60 and above hit 241 million, accounting for 17.3% of the total population. Accelerated population aging, together with sustained strong demand for medical care and education, unlocks enormous market potential and development space for service robots.

In 2017, China’s service robotics market reached USD 1.32 billion, rising around 28% year-on-year, outpacing the average global growth rate for service robots. The market size rose to USD 1.64 billion in H1 2018, including USD 0.65 billion for household service robots, USD 0.52 billion for medical service robots and USD 0.47 billion for public service robots. Fueled by fast-growing emerging scenarios such as parking robots and supermarket service robots, China’s service robotics market is projected to exceed USD 2.9 billion.

Expanding Application Scenarios for Special Robots, Market Poised for Takeoff

China’s special robotics market is developing at a solid pace with continuous launches of diversified products. Special robots are in prominent demand for responding to earthquakes, floods, extreme weather, mine accidents, fires, security risks and other public safety incidents. The market size stood at USD 0.74 billion in 2017 and reached about USD 0.93 billion in the first half of 2018. As domestic enterprises attach greater importance to workplace safety, special robots will gradually replace human workers for operations in high-risk and complex environments.
